Recent Events

  • PDH Seminar
    • On March 23rd, SWE members and friends attended a PDH seminar hosted by Carrier. Bob Feduik presented on  “Load Calculation for Commercial Buildings Utilizing 3D Modeling Software (HAP)” and gave a brief tour of Carrier’s education facility. Thank you to everyone who came!
  • Mock Interviews and Resume Review with SU SWE
    • Greater Syracuse SWE members and friends collaborated with the SU SWE section to host a mock interview and resume review session for the students. The event was held on Wednesday, March 29th  on SU’s campus.

  • 33rd Annual Scholarship Reception
    • Date: Monday, May 22nd 2023
    • Time: 6pm
    • Location: Carrier in Syracuse (address + parking will be sent to those who RSVP)
    • Cost: Complimentary for recipients, their families, and select other attendees, $5 for SWE members, $15 for all others. Payments can be made via cash at the event or through the PayPal button below.
    • Keynote Speaker: Kristen Nelson, CMRP, CRL, Plant Manager at Novelis Oswego Works

  • Additional General Body and Scholarship Committee Meetings as needed
  • June- Join us in celebrating International Women in Engineering Day! We will be gathering for a trivia night somewhere in the Syracuse area. Details to come.

Other Business

  • Nominating Committee
    • Need 2-3 volunteers to establish and distribute the slate for our FY24 elections. Must be SWE members. Estimated time commitment is 2-3 hours between now and mid-June. Please email us for more information or to volunteer.
  • Nominees Needed
    • Ariel Judd, our current Treasurer is stepping down to focus on her growing family and career and we are seeking nominations for ALL officer positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary). In the event that a new officer is elected the current holder of that position will provide guidance throughout the year. Nominees must be SWE members; self-nomination is allowed. Please email us your nominations by 5/30 and they will be passed along to the Nominating Committee once established.
  • Join or renew today! We are now in Q4 of SWE’s fiscal year, meaning that it’s time for FY24 memberships!

Scholarship Updates

  • We are looking to expand our list of sponsors for the scholarship program. If your employer might be interested, please send us the contact information for the appropriate person! More details can be found on our website: http://greatersyracuse.swe.org/sponsorship.html, (list of confirmed 2023 sponsors is at the bottom of the page). Donations are accepted year round but sponsorship commitments for 2023 are due 5/1.
  • Recipients for 2023 have been selected- please join us in recognizing them at our 33rd Annual Scholarship Reception (details above).

  • March- PDH Seminar
    • Date: Thursday 3/23 
    • Time: Training to start @6pm, A light dinner will be provided starting @5:45pm
    • Location: Bynum Carrier University Training Center, East Syracuse or via Zoom upon request

    • Cost: Free for members, $5 non-members
    • RSVP for in person is closed, but we a still accepting requests for Zoom
  • March- Mock Interviews and Resume Review with SU SWE
    • Date: Wednesday 3/29 
    • Time: 6:30pm
    • Location: SU campus
    • We still need another 1-3 volunteers to conduct the mock interviews and/or review resumes. Please respond to this email if interested.

  • Seeking input! We typically take the summer months (June/July) off, but are considering an event for International Women in Engineering Day (June 23). Please respond to this email if you would be interested in attending a June event, and if you’d prefer a network event (such as a happy hour) or an outreach event.

Outreach Opportunities

  • Scholarship Application Reviewers: We are looking for volunteers to review this year’s scholarship applications during the first two weeks of April. A rubric and instructions are provided and the time commitment is flexible- attendance of the selection meeting (week of 4/17) is encouraged but not required. Volunteers must be paid SWE members.  If interested please email the Scholarship Committee at SyracuseSWE.Scholarship@gmail.com.
  • Saturday, 4/1, 8-11am- Judges are needed for the annual CNY Science & Engineering Fair (CNYSEF) organized by the MOST held at Le Moyne College. We will not be participating as an official group, but a handful of members will be there with friends and/or their employer.   • Reminder if you are a paid member of SWE- Make your outreach count!
    • Have you done STEM outreach through your employer or another organization? It can be counted for our section! Help show how active we are by filling out the Society’s official “SWE Outreach Metric Tool” survey. Note: Any outreach done as an event through our section will be entered by a member of the board.

  • We will again be holding the Scholarship Reception at Carrier in East Syracuse. The event is planned for Monday, May 22nd in the early evening. More details will be shared closer to that date.

Recent Events

  • Friendsgiving and Cookie Swap
    • In November SWE members and friends gathered to enjoy food and get to know each other better. Attendees brought cookies to share. The event was hosted at a section member’s home.

  • Networking Cocktails and Holiday Dinner
    • On Thursday, December 8th SWE members and friends met at the Press Room Pub in Syracuse for a networking happy hour followed by dinner. We had an excellent turnout with new and returning faces. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

  • Winter Event- We are looking for your input! Please let us know if you would be interested in either an outdoor event such as snowshoeing or in going to a Syracuse Crunch hockey game as a group. Either option will cost about $30 per person. Respond to this email with your preference by 1/11.

Recent Events

  • FY23 Kickoff Picnic
    • In early September we held our annual kickoff picnic and first general body meeting of the fiscal year at Clay Central Park. Attendees enjoyed the outdoor setting, food, and discussed ideas and established an outline for our FY23 activities. Thank you to all who attended!

  • Career Panel with SU SWE
    • On Thursday, October 6th we held a panel discussion with the Syracuse University SWE section. Thank you to the five professionals who volunteered to share their experiences and advice! The event was well attended and we are excited to be able to collaborate in person again.

  • Pumpkin Picking
    • Unfortunately this event was canceled due to lack of RSVPs

Board updates
SU Liaison

  • We are pleased to welcome Lesen Haracz to our leadership team. Lesen recently relocated to the greater Syracuse area and she has volunteered to serve as our liaison with the Syracuse University SWE section for FY23.

Outreach Chair

  • We are pleased to welcome Valerie Lisi to our leadership team. Val has been a member of our section for several years and she has volunteered to serve as our Outreach Chair for FY23.

Scholarship Committee Co-Chairs

  • We are pleased to welcome Elizabeth Kissner to our leadership team. Elizabeth recently joined our section and has volunteered to serve as one of our Scholarship Committee Co-Chairs for FY23. The other Co-Chair will be our section President, Valerie Countryman.

  • 32nd Annual Scholarship Reception
    • In May we held our 32nd Annual Scholarship Reception. Greater Syracuse SWE members were joined by program sponsors, educators, and family members to celebrate the five outstanding young women who were recognized with the scholarships.
