Recent Events
- 35th Annual Scholarship Reception
- On May 5th, 2025 we recognized 5 young women from the Central New York region who are headed to college for STEM related majors in the coming fall. In addition to our members, we were joined by representatives of several of our sponsors, the scholarship recipients, and the recipients’ families and teachers, as well as by our Keynote Speaker, Valerie Lisi, Associate Director of Engineering Sustainability for HVAC at Carrier. The event was held at Carrier, in East Syracuse, NY and the general consensus was that the event went well.
Upcoming Events
- Trivia Night Outing in June to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day!
- We would like to gauge interest and availability for this event, which has had varied participation in the past. A survey will be included in our update email.

- FY26 Officer Nominations- deadline extended to June 6th- all positions are open for nominations.

- Fall events! In the fall we anticipate the below events, which we will discuss in more detail at the August meeting
- We are looking to work with a Junior Girl Scout troop out of the Fayetteville-Manlius School District to help the girls earn the “STEM Career Exploration” Badge. We will be seeking volunteers to participate on a high level career path panel. We previously discussed doing this this spring but it was agreed with the troop to postpone until fall.
- Fall Career Fair/Conference Prep with SU SWE! We anticipate needing volunteers for an evening event with resume review and interview prep stations.

Note: The 4/16 sponsorship deadline listed is primarily for inclusion in print materials, donations are accepted year round.
- We started on event planning including preliminary menu selection and discussing this year’s theme.
SU SWE
- SU SWE is hosting a panel discussion the week of March 24 as part of their Women’s History Month events and are seeking 2-3 additional professionals to participate. The panel discussion will cover topics around career pathways in engineering, transitioning from academia to industry, and work-life balance for women in STEM. Exact date and time will depend on panelist availability. If you are interested in volunteering please email SU SWE president Luiza Owuor at LAOWUOR@syr.edu

We are seeking volunteers to participate on a high level career path panel and possibly with other activities at some point this spring. The troop typically meets in the evenings on Thursdays. - Holiday Happy Hour and Dinner
- In January we held our annual Holiday Happy Hour and Dinner. SWE members and friends enjoyed food, drink, and networking at the CopperTop Tavern in Camillus. Thank you to everyone who came!
- Fall Seminar
- In November members and other local professionals met and viewed an online seminar on managing burnout.

- Rice Creek Field Station, a part of SUNY Oswego, offers guided nature walks and other nature-related programming free and open to the public many weekends each year. An interest survey will be sent out soon for attending an event as a group sometime this winter or spring, with a coffee hour either before or after depending on the event time.

- We will be putting on a seminar in November using one of the presentations from SWE’s online Advance Learning Center. The topic selected via vote by section members is “Managing Burnout for Busy People”. Unfortunately, after further verification, we learned that this session will NOT be eligible for PDH credit in NY State. GHD will host the event at their location on Widewater Parkway and will also be sponsoring dinner. The event is free for all to attend.

- In September we kicked off the fiscal year with a picnic at Onondaga Lake Park in Syracuse. SWE members and friends enjoyed networking and food! Thank you to everyone who came!

- We would also like to thank Sam Kerlin for volunteering to fill the Scholarship Application Coordinator Apprentice position.
- 2025 Scholarship Program
- We kicked off the 2025 Scholarship program by discussing the timeline, anticipated dates, and reception location.
- Largest item of note- in recent years we have run into several scheduling conflicts for our recipients between our reception and end-of-year school affiliated commitments. In order to try to avoid these conflicts we will be moving our program timeline up by two weeks. Applications will now be due in mid-March and the reception will be in early May.

In addition to our members, we joined by representatives of several of our sponsors, the scholarship recipients, and the recipients families and teachers, as well as by our Keynote Speaker, Katie Backus, PE, Vice President of Gas Program Delivery at National Grid. The event was held at Carrier, in East Syracuse, NY. Though this was not a record breaking year in regards to sponsorship we still received outstanding support from both long-term and new sponsors- each recipient received a $1750 scholarship. It was a lovely evening and we look forward to continuing the tradition in 2025.

- In late June Greater Syracuse SWE members and friends gathered at Meier’s Creek Brewing Co.- Inner Harbor to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day! We enjoyed food, drinks, and participated in Trivia night at the venue.
