FY 2018 Events
Kick-off Summer Picnic
On Tuesday, July 18th we had a great turnout for our Annual Kickoff meeting which we held as a picnic at Clarks Reservation State Park. Attendees enjoyed networking, meeting this year's new Executive Board, and socializing while also discussing ideas for events and activities this coming year. Thank you, everyone who attended!
SWE at the Great NY State Fair
New at the State Fair this year was a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) building with demonstrations and activities for kids being run by organizations such as ours. On Sunday, August 27th volunteers from our section and the Syracuse University section made marshmallow-toothpick structures with kids of all ages. On a day with record breaking fair attendance we had many participants! Thank you everyone who helped out!
Nature Hike at Beaver Lake
On Thursday, September 28th SWE enjoyed a guided nature walk at Beaver Lake! Six SWE members and guests enjoyed a guided tour of the Bog Trail at Beaver Lake Nature Center. On their walk they learned about the bog's unique ecosystem, carnivorous plants, beaver dams, and much more!
Apple Picking!
Several members and friends from both our section and the Syracuse University section met up at Beak & Skiff Orchard. Apple cider and cider donuts were enjoyed before going off to pick apples- just our luck u-pick apples were FREE the day we went!
Friendsgiving
In November we held a Friendsgiving event! Fourteen members and friends gathered to enjoy good food, meet new people, and brainstorm ideas for future events! The evening was hosted by our Section Rep Chelsea Armstrong at her house in Clay. SWE will provided the main dishes (Turkey, potatoes, etc), though we did ask that each attendee contribute $5 towards this. Many attendees also contributed with desserts or beverages. Thank you everyone who attended, we had a lovely time!
Annual Holiday Dinner
In December we held our annual Holiday Dinner. Roughly 20 members and guest met at the Empire Brewing Company in Syracuse to enjoy food, drinks, and networking!
"Following my Foremothers: The Curtiss Wright Cadette Program and Women Engineers during WWII"
We had a great turnout on March 19th for a brief networking event followed by a seminar on women engineers during WWII given by Prof. Ruth Baltus of Clarkson University's Dept. of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Curtiss Wright, an airplane manufacturer, trained women as engineers to fill the gaps left by drafted men during the war, yet there is very little information available on the program. Prof. Baltus, whose mother and aunt participated in the program, gave an engaging talk on this little known piece of women's history. The event was hosted by O'Brien & Gere, who also provided food.
Carrier Dome Tour
SWE members and friends enjoyed a tour of Syracuse University's Carrier Dome on Monday, April 30th at 5:30pm. Home of SU Football, Basketball, and Lacrosse, this building is a shining example of advances in structural engineering. Attendees learned about the technical aspects of the building, especially the challenge of keeping the proper air pressure, and got a behind the scenes look at the facilities available, including the locker rooms and press box.
28th Annual Scholarship Reception
On May 21st we held our 28th annual scholarship reception. The event was attended by SWE members, the scholarship recipients, their families and teachers, and representatives of our many sponsors. Held at Lockheed Martin's Liverpool facility, attendees enjoyed food, company, a brief overview of the scholarship program's history, and an inspiring talk by the Keynote Speaker, Dean Teresa Dahlberg. It was a lovely evening and we look forward to continuing the tradition.
